SCROLL

The house

Two roofs, one pool between them.

Villa Ndoto is a main house and a two-storey guest villa either side of a large swimming pool, in Msitu Kwetu on the Diani coast. The whole property is let as one, to one party of up to eight. There is no reception, no other guests, and nothing shared with anybody.

Both houses lit at night with the pool between them

Built for the coast, not against it

Natural makuti roofing and large windows let the breeze run straight through the house. The rooms are hung with East and West African carving, textile and brass, collected over years rather than bought as a set.

Upstairs, beside the pool, there is a bar area and an open chill deck under its own makuti roof. It is the part of the house guests end up using most.

Two bedrooms are in the main house and two in the guest villa, across the pool. A family can take one building and friends the other, or eight of you can spread across both.

What is included

Self-catering, but not on your own.

  • Wi-Fi

    Throughout both houses.

  • Backup power

A generator takes over when the mains go off, which on this coast they do.

  • Air conditioning

On request, at extra charge. Fans throughout as standard.

  • 24 hour security

The compound is walled and guarded around the clock.

  • Chef on request

Cooked for you, or cook yourself. The kitchen is yours either way.

  • Bar and chill deck

Upstairs beside the pool, under its own makuti roof.

  • Massage bed

In the house. A masseur can be arranged.

  • Laundry

Washing done for you during your stay.

Also provided: personal safes in every room, linen and towels, and contact numbers for taxis and tuk tuks kept at the house.

The people who run it

The house is self-catering, but it is not empty. A small household team runs it day to day and is on hand for as much or as little as you want. A chef can be arranged, the laundry is done, and the rooms are kept while you are out.

A closer look

The house is full of things.

Where you are

Diani Beach, five minutes on foot.

The house sits in Msitu Kwetu, opposite the beach, next door to 40 Thieves and The Sands at Nomad. The walk to the sand takes about five minutes, across the Diani Beach Road and down a short path.

Shops, banks and restaurants are a short ride away, and taxis and tuk tuks are easy to find. Contact numbers are kept at the house.

Getting here

Ukunda, the Diani airstrip, is the closest arrival point, with Mombasa the main alternative. A transfer can be arranged for either.

Things to do

  • A dhow under sail on a snorkelling safari

  • A glass-bottom boat on the water off Diani

    Glass-bottom boat

Boats work the length of the beach and will take you out to the reef. Agree a price with the captain before you go.

  • Dhows moored off a sandbar at low tide

    The sandbar

At low tide the sand comes up off the reef and you can walk out to it, which costs nothing at all. Ask at the house for the tide times.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

How many people does the house sleep?

Eight. Four in the main house and four in the guest villa, in four en-suite bedrooms. The property is let whole, to one party, so you are never sharing it.

Is it really self-catering?

Yes, and the kitchen is yours. But a household team runs the house day to day, and a chef can be arranged on request if you would rather not cook.

How far is the beach?

About five minutes on foot. The house is opposite the sand, next to 40 Thieves and The Sands at Nomad, across the Diani Beach Road and down a short path.

Is there air conditioning?

There are ceiling and standing fans throughout, and the makuti roofs and large windows keep the house moving with the breeze. Air conditioning can be arranged on request at extra charge.

What happens when the power goes off?

A generator takes over, so lights and fans stay on.

How do we book, and what does it cost?

Rates are not published, because they depend on the season and the length of the stay. Send your dates and how many of you there are and we will come back with a price.

  • The most amazing place I’ve ever vacationed! We were a large group of nine people, and the accommodation offered an enormous amount of space, with two houses and a lounge by the pool. It was just a short walk to the beach, and many restaurants were easily accessible by tuk-tuk. We hope to be back very soon!
